What are the SSDI eligibility criteria in Idaho?

If you're an Idaho resident unable to work due to a medical condition, you may qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). SSDI is a federal program, but your application is processed locally through Idaho’s Disability Determination Services. To improve your chances of approval, it’s essential to understand and meet the SSDI eligibility criteria.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

What Is SSDI?

SSDI provides monthly financial support to people who are "insured" under Social Security—meaning they’ve worked and paid into the system through payroll taxes. Unlike Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which is based on financial need, SSDI focuses on your work history and medical disability.

SSDI Eligibility Criteria in Idaho

1. You Must Be “Insured” Under Social Security

To be eligible for SSDI:

  • You must have earned enough work credits—generally, 40 credits, with 20 earned in the last 10 years before your disability began.
  • Younger applicants may qualify with fewer credits.

2. You Must Have a Severe Disability

Your condition must:

  • Prevent you from working (substantial gainful activity)—in 2025, this means earning more than $1,550/month (or $2,590 if blind)
  • Be expected to last at least 12 months, or be terminal
  • Significantly limit your ability to perform basic work activities

3. Your Condition Must Meet or Equal a Listing

The SSA's Listing of Impairments (also known as the “Blue Book”) contains medical conditions that may automatically qualify you for benefits if specific criteria are met. Conditions not listed can still qualify if they severely limit your ability to work.

4. You Must Be Unable to Do Past or Other Work

SSA will evaluate whether:

  • You can still perform your previous job
  • You can adjust to other work based on your age, education, and work history

If the SSA determines you can't do either, you may be considered disabled.

How Disability Determination Works in Idaho

After you apply, your case is sent to Idaho Disability Determination Services (DDS). This office reviews your:

  • Medical records
  • Work history
  • Daily functioning

You may be asked to attend a consultative examination with an SSA-approved doctor.
